BUT: Whatever comes out of Paris, won’t be enough to reach 1,5 degrees, and avoid serious climate change. It won’t even be enough to reach two degrees. That’s why it’s so incredibly important to create a plan to follow up and strengthen the commitments in the time after the negotiations, so that we reduce our emissions to the necessary level.

So yeah. This is what we have to do. However, many countries are quite reluctant to do so. My home country, Norway, included. Instead we intend to come up with different creative plans on how we can remove greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere.

The problem is that it’s a little unclear what we’re going to do with the carbon, after we (potentially) manage to capture it. Will we manage to capture it forever? Where should we put it? Will it be safe?

To me it seems much safer to develop nice and clean sources of energy, which doesn’t disturb the life in the oceans and on land.

And by the way: I really really enjoy the sun, and I would prefer to be able to see it. So I vote no to the chemical cloud.

The show is on! The UN Climate Conference has started!

I arrived at the conference at an ungodly early hour in about this state:

A great start!

First on the agenda was a press conference with the norwegian Prime Minister and delegation. I’m not a professional journalist, as you might have noticed, but I think I managed to blend in. (Even though I suspect my retro leather backpack and extreme nervousness gave me away). They said a lot of vague things about increasing the Norwegian ambitions. I will have a closer look at what this means at a later point.

Even though today was the official start of the negotiations, there haven’t been a lot of negotiating. The state leaders stole the show:

Leader after leader spoke (with funny dubbed voices over the headset) about climate change being the biggest challenge of our time. We have to work together in solidarity and be nice to each other to get out of this alive.

I didn’t find all of them equally trustworthy though. USA just released a “non-paper”, which states that they want any notion of historical responsibility out of the agreement. Which means no compensation to the guilt-free developing countries, severely affected  by climate change. So much for “we embrace our responsibility to do something about it”.

Why people send out “non-papers” randomly, I don’t know.

The message from the “non-paper” made me even more depressed when I heard the speech of Micronesias president.

I wish all would listen to Micronesia.

Then I headed home, in the same state as which I arrived. I wonder what tomorrow might bring. See you soon.

My name is Jenny, and I’m also an earthling. We have that in common, you and I. Here’s a drawing of me, so we get to know each other a little better.

I live here:

Planet earth isn’t doing all that well these days, which worries me. It is my home, after all.

We, i.e humanity (or at least some of us), have had about a century of berserk partying. We have done all things fun, like driving cars, burning oil and eating palm-oil marinated steak for breakfast and dinner and… yeah.

We have made a real mess of things, both for the planet and for ourselves.

Even the United States of America, who are overly fond of driving cars and burning oil, are saying it´s urgent that we fix things.

Exactly how we are going to “do something about it” is a bit ambiguous to me. I am SO READY to do something, but I feel the need for some firm ground rules.

Others are also struggling to get a grip on the issue. After all, Climate Change affects every country on the planet. We have to solve this together. The countries of planet earth don’t always see eye to eye on things, which makes it a bit of a challenge to find a solution that works for all.

But we are still trying! Because the alternative… well.. there is none. In December the world leaders will meet in Paris, at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change. They will try to negotiate their way to what I hope will be a proper plan for how we can avoid extinguishing ourselves.

(The United Nations Conference on Climate Change is also called COP21, which sound a bit like a police movie)

I am incredibly curious and exited about this. I want to know what’s going on. How are these enormous decisions made? Are they taking care of my planet? Our planet? What will happen during the negotiations? Will I even understand it if something happens? I have the feeling international negotiations can be a bit hard to grasp.

That’s why I’m going to Paris. I want to know what happens (and doesn’t happen) over there. I want to talk with people, observe and experience the negotiations for myself. I want to learn. I don’t know what to expect, but I’m thrilled about what I might discover.
